Lessons learned from thunderstorms.

Having lived in Illinois my entire life, I have experienced my share of skeleton shaking thunderstorms and “hide in the basement” tornado warnings! In my earliest memories my father taught us how to stay safe by learning to come inside when we heard thunder, because lightning could be near-by. Paying attention to one event (thunder) could save us from a more serious event (lightning) if we simply understood the signal.

Listening to the warnings of the world today, most of us are now working from home. With this unprecedented event leaving many rushing to adapt, the usual data security safety processes may not be fully in place. Targeted phishing events capitalizing on this situation have increased substantially these past weeks. Watching for the warning signs can save you from a serious event.

Warning Sign: An email with a familiar Amazon format, suggesting that your $1800 laptop computer is in route and should be to you tomorrow. “$1800 bucks?! – I didn’t order this!”. You click on the link and – ouch! The screen turns red and some bad person in a faraway place offers to make your life normal again, but for a stiff fee.

What should you do instead when you see the Amazon ad? Delete it immediately, then open a new browser window log into your Amazon account and safely check it out.

Over the next weeks, I will be sending you information designed to help you overcome the data security stresses of working from home. You can handle this, and I’ll be right there alongside you!

Warmest Regards

Todd Creek
